Persian music respected in Europe: Iranian musician

TEHRAN, June 28 (MNA) -- Persian music is respected and praised in Europe and it is an honor for the Dutch Heerlen Music School to hold courses of Persian music for students, said Iranian musician Hamid Motabassem.

“When I began my activities as a musician teaching tar and setar in the Heerlen Music School in the Netherlands seven years ago, none of my European colleagues had a clear image of Persian music and its instruments. Now after all these years, Persian music is respected. We are holding seminars and workshops to introduce Persian culture and are expecting to give an increased number of concerts,” he told the Persian service of MNA.

“When I went to Europe 25 years ago, I noticed that Europeans had little information about Persian music, and in their cultural centers there were only a few records from ney virtuoso Hassan Kasaii, santur virtuoso Faramarz Payvar and singer Khatereh Parvaneh.

“And now after all these years, seminars and workshops have spread knowledge of and interest in Persian music to the West,” he remarked.

“Music knows no boundaries and is a common language among all nations, helping to connect all cultural spheres with one another,” he noted.

“The combination of Oriental music with Western music has always been interesting, and it was on that basis that I proposed the idea of forming an ensemble named Pardis in which European musicians are now playing.

“The European musicians gradually became familiar with Iranian music and now understand its ambience quite well. The compositions we play are entirely Iranian, but to be honest, I can only compose Iranian pieces. It is clear that what I compose is not really traditional, but we can call it modern Iranian music which contains Persian melodies,” he explained.

“The ensemble first functioned as a music school to encourage students and teachers. We have so far held several educational concerts, and we are planning to invite Iranian and European professional musicians for future programs,” he added.

Motabassem also cooperates with Dastan traditional ensemble and hopes to continue his collaboration with their group as well.
