Iran praises peaceful referendum in Kyrgyzstan
TEHRAN, June 30 (MNA) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry has issued a statement welcoming peaceful referendum on constitutional reform in Kyrgyzstan.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast also congratulated Ms. Rosa Otunbayeva for being elected as the authorized head of the new Kyrgyz government.
Mehmanparast expressed hope that the high turnout of the Kyrgyz people and their support for the constitutional reform would lead to the establishment of peace and security in the Central Asian country.
Following the overthrow of President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, Kyrgyzstan held a referendum on Sunday for constitutional reform. The interim government has put forward two issues: reform to the constitution (the reduction of presidential power) and the confirmation of Rosa Otunbayeva as the authorized head of the new government, vesting to her the power of president for a six month transitional period.
