Japanese overseas travelers in summer forecast to rise 8.4%+
TOKYO, July 2 Kyodo -
Travel agency JTB Corp. on Friday forecast the number of Japanese overseas
travelers on summer vacation this year may rise 8.4 percent from the previous
year to 2.44 million due to Japan's economic recovery and the yen's
appreciation against foreign currencies.
Overseas travel demand in the summer vacation season between mid-July and the
end of August is thus expected to increase for the second consecutive year.
By destination, the number of travelers to China is estimated to increase 14.8
percent to 418,000 people due to the ongoing Shanghai World Expo. Those
visiting South Korea may amount to 408,000 people, up 9.7 percent.
But travelers to Thailand are expected to decline 24.1 percent to 82,000 people
due to the recent antigovernment riots.
Those going to Hawaii are projected at 180,000 people, up 10.4 percent. Those
traveling to Europe are estimated to increase 6.2 percent to 345,000 people.
The average overseas travel expense per person is put at 218,700 yen, up 3.0
percent.
Japanese travelers to domestic locations for summer vacation are also expected
to increase 4.0 percent to 74.12 million people, the first rise in three years.
