Tehran exhibit explores Louvre Museum treasures
TEHRAN, July 4 (MNA) -- Photos of a number of objects on display at the Louvre Museum are showcased in an exhibit, which opened at Tehran’s Honar Cultural Center on Saturday.
The weeklong show is part of a program entitled “Excursion to the World’s Great Museums”, which have been arranged to familiarize Iranians with the treasures on display at world museums.
The exhibit features the Louvre Museum of Paris and its collection via a selection of photos taken by Iranian photographer Meysam Movahhedfar.
Movahhedfar took the photos during Noruz on his trip to Paris where members of Iran’s Ferdowsi Foundation held a variety of programs on the occasion of the registration of the Shahnameh millennium on UNESCO’s calendar of events for 2010 in late May.
The Louvre’s collection of paintings is one of the richest in the world, representing all periods of European art up to Impressionism. The Louvre’s collection of French paintings from the 15th to the 19th century is unsurpassed in the world, and it also has many masterpieces by Italian Renaissance painters and Flemish and Dutch painters of the Baroque period.
The department of Oriental antiquities is most notable for its collection of Mesopotamian art. In 1954, a section for Christian antiquities was established to group early Christian, Byzantine, and Coptic artifacts, including ivory, glass, ceramics, textiles, gold, and Greek and Russian icons.
The exhibit will run for one week at the center located on Arasbaran St., Seyyed Khandan neighborhood.
