Iran marks 28th anniversary of kidnapped diplomats
TEHRAN, July 5 (MNA) -- Foreign Ministry hosted a ceremony on Sunday to mark the 28th anniversary of the abduction of four Iranian diplomats kidnapped in Lebanon in 1982.
Four Iranian nationals, chargé d’affaires Mohsen Mousavi, military attaché of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ahmad Motevasellian, Taqi Rastegar Moqaddam, a diplomat from the embassy, and Kazem Akhavan, a reporter and photographer from the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), were captured by a Phalangist militia while traveling to southern Lebanon on July 4, 1982, then handed over to the Zionist regime and transferred to a prison in occupied Palestine.
A number of foreign ambassadors and family members of the abducted diplomats attended the ceremony.
Iran holds Israel solely responsible for the fate of the diplomats as Lebanese Phalangist militants captured the diplomats and handed them over to Israel. Parts of Lebanon were under the occupation of Israel when the diplomats went missing.
“The fate of a considerable number of Lebanese citizens, foreign nationals and the Iranian diplomats is in ambiguity as the Zionist regime” refuses to give information about the whereabouts of the abductees, Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told the participants.
The Foreign Ministry will seriously investigate the abduction of diplomats through experienced international lawyers, the top diplomat explained.
Iranian presidential advisor on women's affairs, Maryam Mojtahedzadeh, who is the wife of one of the abducted diplomats, read out the president’s statement at the ceremony.
In the statement, Ahmadinejad has called on the Foreign Ministry to “seriously pursue” the fate of the four Iranian diplomats until a final result is reached.
All the relevant bodies in the Islamic Republic of Iran have made considerable efforts over the last 28 years regarding the issue, the statement said.
