Iran's economic growth lags behind the 20-Year Outlook Plan: Larijani

TEHRAN, July 5 (MNA) – Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has warned that the national economic growth is running behind the trajectories envisaged in the 20-Year Outlook Plan.

“We are still away from the indices set forth in the 20-year Outlook Plan, and this gap is harmful to the national economy as a whole,” Larijani told the Mehr News Agency in an exclusive interview.

All efforts in the Majlis Planning and Budget Committee should be focused on how to narrow this gap and achieve the desirable economic growth, he stated.

An economic growth based on the 20-year plan is the most important issue for the country at present and the parliament should focus on that, Larijani noted.

Larijani also dismissed a criticism by the administration which claims parliament tends to change the submitted bills unnecessarily.

Changing bills is the right of the Majlis, and only the Guardian Council has the authority to pass judgment on the conformity of bill with Islamic laws and the constitution, he noted.

“Majlis does not give orders, nor does it take orders,” the senior lawmaker added.

He pointed out that such allegations are often exaggerated in the media and thus deflect attention from more urgent issues facing the country.
