Iranian speaker to attend parliamentary summit in Geneva

TEHRAN, July 5 (MNA) -- Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani will participate in the third Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) conference in Geneva which will start on July 19.

Larijani will elaborate on Iran’s stance on important regional and international issues, particularly those related to the world of Islam, the Majlis press office said in a report on Monday.

The conference will start from July 19 to 21 with the participation of parliament speakers of the member states and parliamentary delegations.

The main theme of the conference is to secure global democratic accountability.

Larijani will hold a series of meetings with speakers of the member parliaments on the sidelines of the conference.

The national parliaments of 143 countries are members of the IPU, and seven regional parliamentary assemblies are associate members. The IPU has permanent observer status at the United Nations.

IPU conference, hosted at United Nations headquarters, is held every five years; the first and the second conferences were held in 2000 and 2005.
