Iran to participate in Sitting Volleyball World Championships

TEHRAN, July 6 (MNA) -- Iran will take part in the 2010 Sitting Volleyball World Championships which will be held in Edmond, Oklahoma, U.S. from July 11 to 18.

The five-time Paralympics gold medalist has been drawn in Pool B along with Iraq, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Serbia and Kenya.

The competition will bring to the U.S. about 600 athletes and coaches from 36 men’s and women’s national teams from around the world.

The Sitting Volleyball World Championships will serve as a qualifier for the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.

The 2010 Sitting World Championships will be held in the UCO Hamilton Field House in Edmond.

Iran has dominated sitting volleyball for the past two decades, having won the gold medals at the 1988 Seoul, 1992 Barcelona, 1996 Atlanta, 2000 Sydney and 2008 Beijing Paralympics.

Only at the 2004 Athens Paralympics final, Iran was beaten by Bosnia-Herzegovina and took home the silver medal.
