Iran says security in Afghanistan, region is interlinked
TEHRAN, July 17 (MNA) – In a meeting with Afghan Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul in Tehran on Friday, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad insisted that a progressive and secure Afghanistan will help peace and security in the region and the world.
Ahmadinejad said Afghanistan can set its house in order by strengthening unity among its different tribes without the help of foreigners.
Ahmadinejad went on to say that Iran and Afghanistan share cultural affinities which could serve as the basis for the development of constructive ties.
The Afghan foreign minister, for his part, said Iran has always been on the side of Afghans.
Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki, who also met with his Afghan counterpart on Thursday, said “regional approach” is the best way to help resolve Afghanistan’s crisis.
Realization of peace in Afghanistan and the region is not possible without regional cooperation, Mottaki told the top Afghan diplomat.
Mottaki said continued instability in Afghanistan would destabilize the whole region.
Mottaki cited foreign interference and extremism as the major headaches in Afghanistan.
The Iranian FM expressed hope that an upcoming international conference in Kabul would produce positive results for the people of Afghanistan, the region, and the world.
Kabul will host an international conference on July 20, where senior officials from the international community would be getting together to discuss Afghanistan’s priorities on different areas. The conference will be attended by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.
The Kabul Conference is a follow-up to London Conference held in January where international community had renewed its support to Afghanistan and agreed to channel 50 percent of the donors' fund through the Afghan government.
Rassoul underlined the necessity of regional cooperation, saying Iran plays an important role in resolving the Afghanistan crisis.
The Afghan FM renewed his invitation to his Iranian counterpart to attend the Kabul conference which was accepted by Mottaki.
In this meeting, the two foreign ministers also called for closer consultation between the three Persian-speaking countries of Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan.
It was agreed that the next Iran-Afghanistan joint commission summit be held in Tehran in autumn.
Drug fight
Rassoul said that fight against drugs is on the top agenda of his government and called the drug issue a socio-political threat.
22 to 25 provinces of Afghanistan have been cleaned of drugs, he said, adding that fighting against drugs can be done through regional cooperation.
“We are holding negotiations with the international community, and we thank Iran’s help in this regard,” Rassoul told reporters in a joint press conference with Mottaki.
