Iranian plays entertain French viewers at Avignon festival

TEHRAN, July 17 (MNA) -- Four Iranian plays are entertaining French audiences during the 64th Avignon Theater Festival running from July 7 to 27.

“The Mute Who Was Dreaming” by director Atila Pesyani, “Revelation on a Silent Party” by Reza Haddad, “The City without the Sky” by Kiumars Moradi, and “6 Minutes and 36 Birthday Cakes” by Siamak Ehsaii are the plays being staged daily at the festival’s Gilgamesh Theater.

“Each day viewers, including critics, producers and directors, sit down to watch our plays and it is surprising for them to see that Iran is taking part in the event after a 17-year hiatus,” director Moradi told the Persian service of ISNA.

Iran is participating along with several other troupes from Thailand, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, India, Spain and several others.

“We were unable to advertise widely due to a budget shortfall, but audiences are the best advertisers and they spread the word about the Iranian plays,” he added.

The Iranian troupe consists of four directors and seven actors. Fatemeh Naqavi, Khosro Pesyani, Setareh Pesyani, Naz Shadman of the Bazi Theater Group and Pantea Panahiha, Siamak Ansari, and Omid Sonei of the Sayeh Theater Group are performing in all the plays.

“Our troupe begins their performance at 5pm with ‘The Mute Who Was Dreaming’. Afterwards ‘The City without the Sky’ goes on stage. ‘Revelation on a Silent Party’ and ‘6 Minutes and 36 Birthday Cakes’ come next all in one day. This is a difficult task and we have to change the props and scenery on stage quickly each time for the next play,” he explained.

Moradi whose “City without the Sky” goes on stage with French subtitles at the program, continued that some of the viewers were highly impressed and even broke into tears while watching the play.

Since its creation by Jean Vilar in 1947, the Avignon Theater Festival has become an international platform for the performing arts, gathering artists and audiences from all around the world.
