Iranian parliament confirms 3 jurists to Guardian Council

TEHRAN, July 19 (MNA) – Iran's Majlis (parliament) voted on Sunday for three jurists to the Guradian Council. The jurists confirmed are Mohammad Reza Alizadeh, Mohammad Salimi, and Siyamak Rahpeik.

Of 228 MPs present in the parliament, Alizadeh (the current member of the Guardian Council) received 207 votes, Salimi (the head of the branch 31 of the Supreme Court) 162 votes, and Rahpeik (the head of the Judicial Faculty in Tehran) 114 votes.

Mohammad Hadi Sadeqi, a faculty member of Shiraz University and Ahmad Beigi Habib-Abadi, advisor to the Judiciary chief, received 82 and 35 votes respectively, lagging far behind the other three.

In a letter to the Majlis speaker on Wednesday, Judiciary Chief Sadeq Larijani nominated five jurists for the GC membership.

The Guardian Council is composed of six Islamic jurists who are directly appointed by Supreme Leader and six lawyers who are elected by parliament from among those nominated by the Judiciary.

In a decree issued on Thursday the Supreme Leader reappointed three religious jurists to the Guardian Council including the current Guardian Council secretary Ahmad Janati.

Guardian Council members are elected for a six-year term.

Constitutionally, the Guardian Council is in charge of vetting election candidates for presidency, Parliament and the Assembly of Experts. Ensuring the compatibility of legislation passed by Parliament with the criteria of Islam and the Constitution is among other duties of the council.
