Iran's senior cleric rebuffs British envoy’s request for a meeting
TEHRAN, July 21 (MNA) -- Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami has twice rebuffed the British ambassador’s request for a meeting.
On June 27, the British ambassador to Iran sent a letter to Khatami asking if a meeting could be scheduled, but Khatami did not reply to the letter.
Later, the British Embassy sent a letter to him via the Iranian Foreign Ministry, and the cleric responded this time but said he did not want to meet the British ambassador.
Khatami stated that due to Britain’s dark legacy of hostility toward Islam and Muslims as well as its role in the post-election incidents in Tehran in 2009, he is not interested in meeting the ambassador.
After President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was re-elected in the June 12, 2009 presidential election, the supporters of Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mahdi Karroubi took to the streets in major cities to protest the election results. Mousavi, who finished second, and Karroubi, who finished fourth, both claimed that there had been vote rigging.
