Nagasaki issues 1st `Peace Correspondent` certificate

NAGASAKI, Japan, July 24 Kyodo -
The atomic-bombed city of Nagasaki on Saturday named Yumi Tanaka, an organizer
of the New York Peace Film Festival, as the first ''Nagasaki Peace
Correspondent'' who contributes to eliminating nuclear weapons and conveys
overseas the voices of Nagasaki people.
''I want to convey Nagasaki's voice from New York,'' Tanaka, a 42-year-old
native of Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, who now lives in New York City, said
after receiving the certificate from Nagasaki Mayor Tomihisa Taue at the
Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims.
The film festival presents movies from around the world that advance global peace.
The mayor said, ''She's the right person to receive the first certificate. She
can pass various messages to the United States.''
Nagasaki was devastated by an atomic bomb dropped by the United States in
August 1945 in World War II.
The municipal government issues the certificate to those who live or stay
overseas for a lengthy period and work to pass the city's wish for peace to the
world.
For the certificate's recipients, Nagasaki will provide photo panels of the
radiation-exposed city and materials for peace education to support their
activities.
