Drug smuggling to Iran decreases by 50%: Police
ARDABIL, July 26 (MNA – Over the past five years, illicit drug smuggling to Iran has been decreased by 50 percent, National Police Chief Ismail Ahmadi Moqaddam announced on Sunday.
Smuggling of drugs from Afghanistan to the country has also been decreased from 62 percent to 30 percent in this period, Mehr News Agency correspondent in Ardabil quoted Ahmadi Moqaddam as saying.
According to the report published by the United Nations last year, drug smuggling from Afghanistan decreased by 30 percent to Iran, 40 percent to the Middle Asian countries and 30 percent to Pakistan, he added.
Ahmadi Moqaddam cited fortifying the borders and campaign against drug smugglers as the major causes of the decline.
