Major developments to affect Iraq, Afghanistan: commander

TEHRAN, July 26 (MNA) -- Iraq and Afghanistan are about to undergo important developments, Brigadier General Massoud Jazayeri said on Sunday.

Jazayeri, who spoke to the Mehr News Agency, also pointed to baseless claims made by U.S. commander General Ray Odierno, who has recently said Iran is supporting three Shia extremist groups in Iraq.

Jazayeri said Iran’s support of Iraq is strategic and that Tehran’s interests in Baghdad are in fact the interests of the Iraqi people and government.

The peace and stability in Iraq will benefit Iran and other countries in the region, he added. Therefore, it is essential that Iran continues to support Iraq.

Iran and Iraq have numerous commonalities and Iraqi people regard Iranians as their friends and brothers.

He went on to say evidence suggests that paramilitary and terrorist groups in Iraq are either directly or indirectly in contact with the U.S., while Washington claims its support of human rights.

In actuality, the U.S. officials have double-standard policies toward terrorist and anti-terrorism actions, he stated.

His remarks came after it was revealed that the U.S. and Israel plan to attack two countries in the Middle East, not including Iran.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Friday the U.S. and Israel plan to attack two Middle Eastern countries.
