Kazakhstan prepares to enter the WTO
ALMATY, 23 July (Khabar) - In a year and a half, Kazakhstan is due to become a member of the World Trade Organisation with the concluding stages of negotiation currently in progress.
Kazakhstan has so far signed agreements with 20 countries out of the 26 members and consultations with the EuropeanUnion, the USA, Australia, India, Mongolia and Ecuador are part of this process.
The Kazakh delegation is headed by the deputy minister for trade and industry Zhanar Aitzhanova, who says that every stage of negotiation isa battle as every country tries to secure more favourable conditions.
However, Kazakhstan is still able to find compromises and at the same timeprotect its own national interests.
Zhanar Aitzhanova, deputy minister for trade and industry: - The member states of the WTO, in particular those active in the negotiations such as the USA and EU countries along with several developing countries, have taken positive positions in the negotiation process and to the work which the ministers, departments and government of Kazakhstan havedone to make our legislation correspondent to WTO requirements.
According to the deputy minister, Kazakhstan should secure entry before countries with the same export goods enter the WTO. According to the delegates, it will be difficult to come to agreement with these countries asfor them Kazakhstan will be the main competitor on the world markets.
Alexandro Haro, WTO head deputy: - I understand the process taking place in Kazakhstan very well. It has reached a certain level of progress with many reforms in different areas. I can say that Kazakhstan has approached the membership requirements of theWTO.
Kazakhstan is placing a lot of attention on entering the WTO so that the market for Kazakhstan's output will broaden. The Republic has a small domestic market and is in need of access to world markets. WTO membership is also important to attract investment and the development of high production technology. Another very important point is that with improved imports, local consumer will have access to a broader range of goods at lower prices.
