Kabul conference was a turning point for Afghanistan
TEHRAN, July 31 (MNA) -- Iran’s participation in the international conference on Afghanistan in Kabul has tipped the balance in favor of regional countries, Iran’s ambassador to Afghanistan says.
Certain Western powers, and particularly the United States, tried to undermine the role of regional countries in the conference, but they knew that would be unacceptable for neighboring states, Ambassador Fada-Hossein Maleki told the Mehr News Agency in Kabul.
Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki attended the Kabul conference, which was held on July 20, and presented a five-point plan to help resolve the Afghanistan crisis.
On the significance of the conference, Maleki said, “This gathering might have been the most important international conference on Afghanistan over the past few years.”
He added that the conference dealt with a host of important issues.
The ambassador said one aspect of the Kabul conference that made it stand out from all the previous conferences was the fact that Afghanistan itself was in charge of the meeting.
The Afghans performed brilliantly in this conference and showed that they can run their country without any outside assistance, he added.
Another important aspect was that the conference was warmly welcomed and many countries participated, he noted.
Elsewhere in his remarks, he said that official corruption has always been a sword of Damocles hanging over the Afghan government.
However, the Afghan government only has control over 20 percent of foreign financial assistance and the rest is supervised by the donor nations, Maleki added.
