Pakistan serious to implement gas agreement with Iran

TEHRAN, Aug. 1 (MNA) – There is no sign of breach of the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline agreement, Tehran’s ambassador to Islamabad told the Mehr News Agency.

The Pakistan foreign minister in Karachi has emphasized his country’s commitment to the agreement and Pakistan is serious to implement the deal, Mashallah Shakeri noted.

Iran and Pakistan formally signed an export deal in Tehran in June under which Pakistan will import 750 million cubic feet of gas daily for 25 years from 2014.

The pipeline would connect Iran's South Fars gas field with Pakistan's southern Baluchistan and Sindh provinces.

The contract is the latest step in completing a multi-billion dollar gas pipeline between Iran and Pakistan within the next four years.

On the possible impact of the UN Security Council sanctions on the implementation of the agreement, Shakeri said for this reason Iranian Oil Minister Masoud Mirkazemi is going to visit Islamabad in the near future.

Recently, the EU adopted new sets of sanctions targeting Iran’s foreign trade, banks and insurance companies, as well as energy sectors.

This trip will take place before the holy month of Ramadan, or it will be postponed until the end of this month, Shakeri added.

The holy month of Ramadan will start on August 11 and will continue until the September 9.

The ambassador also said the Pakistani ministers of water and industry will pay a visit to Tehran in the upcoming months.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Shakeri stated that Iran-Pakistan joint commission will be held in Islamabad in late September with the attendance of Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and the Pakistani economy minister.
