A-bomb survivors to appear in TV commercial in Australia+
HIROSHIMA, Aug. 3 Kyodo -
A television commercial featuring atomic-bomb survivors at Hiroshima Peace
Memorial Park appealing for the abolition of nuclear weapons will be broadcast
nationwide in Australia on Friday on the 65th anniversary of the atomic bombing
on the city.
The 60-second commercial was created by the Australia-based International
Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. It shows about 30 students calling on the
United States, Russia and other nuclear weapons states to abolish the weapons
before focusing on two atomic-bomb survivors making their pleas in English for
a nuclear-free world.
The commercial, which also shows the students saying ''Please'' to the camera,
is part of an Internet-driven campaign named ''A Million Pleas.'' The campaign
aims to collect 1 million messages against nuclear weapons from around the
world.
The group said it aims to air the commercial in the United States and Japan as
well.
One of the survivors, Toshiko Tanaka, 71, of Hiroshima's Higashi Ward, attended
a shooting session held at the park on July 23. Tanaka was exposed to the
atomic bombing at her home when she was 6.
''I tried to express my conviction that nuclear weapons and mankind cannot
coexist,'' she said.
