Iran, Oman call for security cooperation in Strait of Hormuz
TEHRAN, Aug. 4 (MNA) – The Iranian and Omani defense ministers have called for the expansion of cooperation to tighten security in the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf.
In a meeting in Muscat on Tuesday, Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi and his Omani counterpart Badr bin Saud bin Harib al-Busaidi said the two countries should expand cooperation to help maintain security in the region particularly in the Strait of Hormuz.
Vahidi said that Iran and Oman enjoy great historical, social, and religious affinities and their relations are improving.
The increased interactions between the two countries not only help maintain stability and security in the region but guarantee a better economic situation and welfare in the region, he stated.
The Omani defense minister called relations between the two countries amicable and said the regular meetings between officials of the two countries would strengthen relations in political, economic, educational, cultural, and defense areas.
He went on to say that Oman would utilize Iran’s experience and knowledge in the area of defense.
On recent sanctions imposed on Iran for its nuclear program, he said sanctions and conflicts will only exacerbate the situation and that negotiation is the only way to resolve the nuclear standoff between Iran and the West.
