TEHRAN, Aug. 4 (MNA) -- The 6th International Sand Sculpture Festival was inaugurated during a ceremony on the Caspian Sea shore, Babolsar, Mazandaran Province, on Tuesday.

The festival is showcasing thirty-one sand sculptures, the head of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance Office in the province Hojjatoleslam Abbas-Ali Ebrahimi mentioned during the opening ceremony.

The artworks are selected from 160 artworks by about 700 artists that were submitted to the secretariat of the festival from six provinces. The festival is held in free, regional, culture and special sections, he added.

The five previous editions of the festival were only nationwide, but the recent edition has become international with the support of the ECO Cultural Institute (ECI).

At the ceremony, ECI Executive Director Muhammad Jamil Owaisi spoke about the history of sculpture and the views of different religions about this artform.

Sculptures created by artists from ECO member countries are on display at the Guest Section of the festival.

Exhibits of handicrafts and regional cuisines are being held on the sidelines of the festival and the public can attend the workshops on making sculptures.
