Whole region will suffer from insecurity in Afghanistan: President Ahmadinejad
TEHRAN, Aug. 7 (MNA) – President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad suggested on Thursday that there is no military solution to the Afghan conflict, saying the whole region will suffer from insecurity in Afghanistan.
The president made the remarks at a joint press conference after he hosted a meeting with his Afghan and Tajik counterparts, Hamid Karzai and Emomali Rakhmon in Tehran on Thursday.
Ahmadinejad called for a prompt resolution to the Afghanistan crisis through “humanitarian and cultural approaches”.
The presence of foreign forces in the region will only complicate the problems, the president said in an indirect reference to the presence of foreign troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.
“The region is fully capable of dealing with its problems in a just, friendly, and peaceful manner. Therefore it is necessary that all regional countries cooperate with each other,” he noted.
“The whole region will benefit from a secure and progressive Afghanistan. We fully support the political path that Afghanistan is treading on and we also support the establishment of a powerful government that is completely in charge of all affairs of the country,” Ahmadinejad added.
Elsewhere in his talks, the president said Iran, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan share abundant cultural and historical affinities and also have common interests and enemies.
He stated that the fourth trilateral gathering of the leaders of the three countries was a milestone in expanding ties between the three Persian-speaking nations.
At their meeting, the three presidents pledged to increase their trade and transport cooperation and stressed the need for closer cooperation in the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking.
The Afghan president also underscored the importance of the tripartite summit of Persian-speaking nations and called for maximum cooperation between the three countries.
Rakhmon, the Tajik president, called the meeting constructive, saying it was the “beginning of a new era” in trilateral relationship.
The three presidents also agreed that Kabul would host their next round of talks.
