Iran protests U.S. aggression threats
TEHRAN, Aug. 7 (MNA) – Tehran has complained to the United Nations over the threatening remarks against Iran by Mike Mullen, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff.
“I think the military options have been on the table and remain on the table,” Mullen said on “Meet the Press” on NBC last Sunday. “It’s one of the options that the president has. Again, I hope we don’t get to that, but it’s an important option and it’s one that’s well understood.”
In a letter to the UN secretary general, Iranian envoy to the UN Mohammad Khazaei strongly criticized the U.S. for its military threats, saying the threats are an obvious breach of the UN charter.
“On different occasions, U.S. authorities and Congress members have threatened the Islamic Republic with the use of force, which is against the international law and the UN charter,” Khazaei noted in the letter.
He also denounced U.S. officials for their irresponsible and unjustifiable remarks, which are based on unfounded grounds.
Khazaei added that Iran reserves the right to defend its territory against any attack under the Article 51 of the UN charter.
Not long after Adm. Mike Mullen’s statement, aired on a Sunday talk show, the deputy chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was quoted as saying there would be a strong response should the U.S. take military action.
