U.S. turned into greatest backer of terrorism over last 30 years: Iran
TEHRAN, Aug. 10 (MNA) – Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast has countered an accusation by the United States that Iran is a supporter of terrorism, saying the U.S. has turned into the greatest supporter of terrorism in the world over the last three decades.
The U.S. State Department in its annual report released on Aug. 5, accused Iran of supporting terrorism.
The United States has been the leading supporter of terrorism for the past three decades, but it tries to cover up its actions through making false allegations against other countries, Mehmanparast stated on Monday.
He went on to say that leveling such unfounded accusations could negatively affect international trust which is significant for global security and stability.
He criticized the U.S. and Western countries’ double-standard approach toward terrorism and cited funding terrorist groups and supporting the Zionist regime’s state terrorism as concrete examples of support for terrorism.
U.S. military presence in Afghanistan has resulted in the increase of narcotics production which is used to fund terrorism and extremism, Mehmanparast opined.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Mehmanparast noted that the international community has paid heavy price in the fight against terrorism due to U.S. unilateral approach.
The U.S. must be put under pressure to change its trend, he noted.
