Iranian academy to honor French photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand

TEHRAN, Aug. 13 (MNA) -- French photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand, who is known primarily for his aerial pictures, is scheduled to be paid tribute during a ceremony at the Iranian Academy of Arts in Tehran today.

The ceremony has been entitled “6 Billion Others”, referring to one of Arthus-Bertrand’s video exhibitions which had the same name and took place in early 2009 at the Grand Palais in Paris.

The exhibition screened over 5,000 videos, which had been recorded around the globe, showing women and men talking about universal themes such as happiness, sorrow, life, death, love and hatred.

Since Arthus-Bertrand, 64, is also an outstanding environmentalist as he has shown marked enthusiasm for nature and wildlife from an early age.

Arthus-Bertrand was a director assistant when he was 17 in 1963. He then tried his hand at acting as he appeared in movies “Dis-moi qui tuer” and “OSS 117 prend des vacances”.

Shortly after, he gave up on the movie industry to run the Château de Saint Augustin wildlife park in Château sur Allier in France.

He left the country with his wife Anne when he was 30 to live in Kenya in the Massai Mara national park.

He lived among the Massai tribe for 3 years to study the behavior of lions’ families and took daily pictures of them during those years.

With this experience, he discovered a new passion for photography and the beauty of landscapes when observed from above in hot air balloons.

He understood the power of a picture and how to communicate using this means.

Arthus-Bertrand came back to France in 1981, published a photograph book “Lions” in 1983, and became an international journalist, reporter and photographer specializing in documentaries on sports, wildlife and aerial photography for French magazines such as Paris Match and Geo.

He photographed ten Paris-Dakar rallies. Every year, he published a book on Roland Garros, the tennis French open. He also took pictures annually at the Paris International Agricultural Show, and of Dian Fossey and gorillas in Rwanda.

Arthus-Bertrand has been the United Nations Environment Program Goodwill Ambassador (UNEP) since April 2009.
