Iran “Prophet Joseph (AS)” writer asks judiciary to settle plagiarism lawsuit against him
TEHRAN, Aug. 17 (MNA) -- Farajollah Salahshur, the screenwriter and director of “Prophet Joseph (AS)”, has asked Iranian judiciary chief to intervene to settle the case in which he has been accused of plagiarism.
He made the plea in a letter to Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani.
“If I have been found guilty (of plagiarism) I should be punished; if I am not guilty, I should be exonerated in court,” Salahshur said in the letter published in Persian news agencies on Monday.
He said that he has many documents to prove his innocence, but he has not been given an opportunity to submit them.
In April, Salahshur was convicted in absentia in a Tehran court over plagiarism for “Prophet Joseph (AS)”, a TV series broadcast by IRIB’s Channel 1 in 2008 and 2009.
Salahshur rejected the court’s decision and is pursuing an appeal. However, no appellate court has heard the case so far.
“If the case remains in suspense, the cultural enemies of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the foreign media will say that Salahshur has escaped punishment through cronyism and governmental support,” Salahshur said in the letter.
After several episodes of “Prophet Joseph (AS)” were broadcast in 2008, a screenwriter named Shahabeddin Taheri accused Salahshur of plagiarizing the TV series by lifting a screenplay he had written on Prophet Joseph (AS) years ago.
