Leader advises students to play more active role in national issues
TEHRAN, Aug. 24 (MNA) -- Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has advised university students to play a more active role in key issues affecting the country.
Students should analyze and adopt a clear stance on issues that are linked to the country’s destiny, such as the Tehran declaration, the UN Security Council resolution, and the unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union,” the Leader said at a meeting with thousands of university students in Tehran on Sunday.
He emphasized the need for ‘freedom of thought’ in universities and said debates should be freely held over various issues at universities.
A number of students also took the podium and expressed their views on scientific, academic, cultural, social, political, and economic issues.
Ayatollah Khamenei praised the students for their detailed and logical analyses of various matters and called on the authorities to respond to “this educated and motivated stratum.”
He stated that there should be a clear distinction between constructive criticism and disparaging remarks, and said the students should criticize the authorities when necessary but they should refrain from political wrangling.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the Leader said that the enemies of the Islamic Republic are on the decline, and despite all their plots against the country, Iran is on the upward path.
Commenting on the 2009 Tehran University dormitory incident, the Leader said the issue has not been pursued seriously enough.
Ayatollah Khamenei stated that lack of motivation in certain relevant organizations has hindered efforts to follow up the matter and added that the issue should be investigated more thoroughly.
On June 15, 2009, days after the presidential election, unidentified people in plain clothes entered the Tehran University dormitory, ransacked buildings, and beat and detained dozens of students.
