Talks meant to give Israel more breathing room: Iran
TEHRAN, Aug. 29 (MNA) -- Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has criticized the U.S.-backed peace talks between Israel and Palestine, saying the United States is only seeking to legitimize its support for the Zionist regime.
At a time when the Zionist regime is declining, the United States is attempting to devise a plan to create more breathing room for Israel, Larijani said in Tehran on Saturday.
Thus, the negotiations are not intended to help the Palestinian people, but rather they are designed to help Israel take advantage of the regional atmosphere, he added.
Acting Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu are to hold direct talks in Washington on September 2.
“If the United States seeks to create artificial hands of support for the Zionist regime through negotiations, they should know that the people of the region will cut those hands off,” the Iranian parliament speaker said.
Larijani stated that the Palestinian issue is a humanitarian issue and should not be regarded as only an ethnic dispute.
He called on Arab states and the rest of the international community to act more responsibly toward the oppressed people of Palestine.
The international community should not allow Israel and the United States to gamble with the future of Palestine and undermine the integrity of the Palestinian people, he stated.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Larijani strongly criticized the West’s double-standard approach toward regional countries.
The Western powers put on a show about their support for the principles of democracy and human rights, but in reality they have established a movement against the democratic states in the region, he noted.
