Iran Majlis committee not happy with president’s choice of Mideast envoy
KHORRAMABAD, Aug. 29 (MNA) – The Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee is concerned over the appointment of Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei as the president’s special envoy for Middle East affairs, top legislator Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Saturday.
In a decree issued last week, President Ahmadinejad appointed Mashaei as his special representative for the Middle East.
Boroujerdi, a former deputy foreign minister, said the parliamentary committee’s concern originates from Mashaei’s lack of expertise in foreign policy issues and the number of posts that he holds.
Apart from being the president’s chief of staff, Mashaei holds a number of positions in the sitting cabinet. He is director of the coordination council for special economic zones as well as a member of the administration’s economic commission.
He is also chairman of the high council of Iranians living abroad, secretary of the administration’s cultural committee, and director of the administration’s working group for pilgrimage affairs.
