Iran prioritizes implementation of agreements with Iraq

TEHRAN, Aug. 30 (MNA) – Iran’s new ambassador to Iraq says an implementation of agreements signed between Iran and Iraq including an exploitation of joint oil fields is high on his agenda.

Hassan Danaei-Far told the Mehr News Agency that settling the remaining issues between Iran and Iraq based the 1975 Algiers Treaty is also among his “top priorities”.

The Algiers Treaty was an attempt to settle the border disputes between Iran and Iraq. In 1980, Iraq attacked Iran and declared that it no longer recognized the treaty.

Under international law, one nation cannot unilaterally reject a previously ratified treaty, and the treaty had no clause providing for abrogation by one nation only.

In July, Iran and Iraq also signed two memorandums of understanding regarding the management of joint oil fields and bilateral energy issues.

Moreover, the ambassador cited expansion of bilateral ties in areas of politics, economy, culture, security, and tourism as his other priorities.

Seeking extradition of MKO members

Elsewhere in his remarks, Danaei-Far said the two sides are pursuing the extradition of Mojahedin Khalq Organization (MKO) members to Iran or their transfer out of Iraq.

According to Iraqi sources about 3,400 MKO members are held at Camp Ashraf in Diyala province near the border with Iran.

The MKO began a campaign of assassinations and bombings in Iran shortly after the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979. The group moved to Iraq in the early 1980s and fought Iran from there until the United States invaded the country in March 2003.

The new ambassador went on to say it is unlikely that Iranian officials pay a visit to Iraq before the formation of a central government in the country.

Danaei-Far had previously expressed optimism that a new Iraqi government would be formed by the end of the lunar month of Ramadan, which will occur on September 9 or 10, depending on the sighting of the new moon.
