Iran loses to Croatia in FIBA World Championship

ISTANBUL, Aug. 31 (MNA) -- Iran was defeated by Croatia
in the 2010 FIBA World Championship on Sunday night.

Iran, who was beaten by Brazil 81- 65 in its opener, lost 75-54 to Croatia in Group B.

Hamed Haddadi, who plays for the Memphis Grizzlies, had 27 points for Iran. Croatian Roko Ukic and Bojan Bogdanovic both scored 13 points.

“The Croatian players were physically stronger than us. We played well against them but were under the influence of our opponent,” Veselin Matic said.

In Group B's other action on Sunday, the U.S. beat Slovenia 99-77 and Brazil overpowered Tunisia 80-65.

The winner of the 2010 FIBA World Championship automatically earns a berth in the 2012 London Olympics.

The 2010 FIBA (International Basketball Federation) World Championship for Men started on August 28 and runs to September 12 in Ankara, Istanbul, Izmir and Kayseri, Turkey. Twenty-four teams are competing in the championship. The teams are divided into four preliminary groups consisting of six teams each.
