Force not a solution to terrorism: Iran’s UN envoy

TEHRAN, Sept. 12 (MNA) – Mohammad Khazaee, Tehran’s ambassador to the United Nations, says Iran does not approve of a resort to force in the fight against terrorism.

“Combating terrorism requires fostering the culture of peace,” Khazaee told the UN General Assembly after the adoption of a new resolution against terrorism in the UN.

“Governments should be committed to adoption of peaceful means to resolve disputes and should avoid resorting to force.”

The UN General Assembly on Thursday reaffirmed its support for the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy. With the unanimous adoption of a new resolution, the 192-member assembly capped its second biennial review of the UN global strategy’s implementation, the Daily Times reported.

Unfortunately, some powers still insists on their warmongering policies and promote violence in the world and in this way present “destructive models” to terrorist groups, Khazaee stated.

He also said some governments adopt double-standard approach toward terrorism to the extent that they overlook the activities of certain terrorist groups.

The senior Iranian diplomat also expressed concern over the expansion of terrorism in the region. “Expansion of terrorist actions in the region is the direct result of extra-regional powers’ intervention in regional issues.”
