Japan-China summit not to be held in N.Y.: sources+

TOKYO, Sept. 15 Kyodo -
Japan and China are not likely to arrange a bilateral summit meeting between
Prime Minister Naoto Kan and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao when they attend a U.N.
General Assembly meeting next week, Japanese government sources said Wednesday.
Tokyo thinks it is not the right time to hold talks between the leaders
following the collisions on Sept. 7 between a Chinese fishing boat and two
Japan Coast Guard ships near the disputed Senkaku Islands, administered by
Japan but also claimed by China and Taiwan, the sources said.
China has stepped up pressure on Japan over the collisions by repeatedly
summoning Japanese Ambassador to China Uichiro Niwa and demanding the immediate
release of the captain of the fishing boat.
The skipper was arrested by Japanese authorities on suspicion of deliberately
causing his vessel to collide with one of the Japanese patrol boats. The
islands are known in China as Diaoyu and in Taiwan as Tiaoyutai.
Beijing has also postponed a senior Chinese legislator's visit to Japan as well
as planned bilateral talks over gas exploration in the East China Sea following
the incident.
