Moscow ready for talks on RF military facilities in Kyrgyzstan - Lavrov.
MOSCOW, September 16 (Itar-Tass) - Moscow is ready for the talks on
the stay of Russian military facilities in Kyrgyzstan, Russian Foreign
Minister Sergei Lavrov told Itar-Tass on Thursday.
The minister commented on Bishkek's proposal to unite Russian military
facilities in Kyrgyzstan and increase the base use rent by three or four
times.
"Not the first year we're discussing the problem how to regulate our
military presence in Kyrgyzstan in compliance with the interstate
agreement. The sides have begun to discuss this problem with the Kyrgyz
government led by President Bakiyev and under Bishkek's proposal. Let's
wait for the elections in Kyrgyzstan when the government is formed,"
Lavrov stressed. "We are ready for the talks. It is important that
Kyrgyzstan will be ready," he said.
Commenting on this issue, CSTO Secretary-General Nikolai Bordyuzha
said, "The first step has been taken" in order to unite Russian military
facilities in Kyrgyzstan. "The talks on creating a united base in
Kyrgyzstan were started a year and half ago. The new Kyrgyz authorities
have recently met with the Russian defence minister to discuss the
formation of such structure. Russia has worked out a plan to create a
united military base, which will extend the stay of the base in Kyrgyzstan
that will, naturally, lead to increasing the rent," the CSTO
secretary-general stressed.
