Russia rejects NATO chief’s Iran containment proposal
TEHRAN, Sept. 19 (MNA) -- Russia’s envoy to NATO has dismissed the NATO chief’s claim that Iran poses a missile threat to Russia, saying his proposed missile defense plan was a hasty decision.
“To settle on guilty parties in this issue means to dodge a discussion of more serious issues. It is not only Iran that possesses missiles in Europe’s southern ‘underbelly,’ but other countries as well, so if we are to start this analysis, we should analyze all those who possess this kind of technology,” Dmitry Rogozin told RIA Novosti on Friday.
NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has claimed that Iran poses a threat to Russia and NATO and has proposed the construction of a new missile defense shield to protect Europe and Russia from the threat of an Iranian missile attack.
“We continue to insist that, before discussing what may be meaningful in the framework of the possible European missile shield project and other serious projects, we need to carry out a serious analysis of missile threats,” Rogozin added.
