Majlis is on top to prevent repetition of tyranny: Iran's Larijani
TEHRAN, Sept. 21 (MNA) -- Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani has said if late Imam emphasized that among the three branches of government, the Majlis is on top of affairs, it was intended to prevent a repetition of dictatorship in Iran.
Larijani made the remarks in a gathering at Isfahan Grand Mosque on Sunday.
In an interview with the daily Iran published on Saturday, the president said certain people cite the late Imam Khomeini’s statement on the importance of the Majlis, but at that time the president was not entirely in charge of the country and the prime minister, who had to be approved by the Majlis, was mostly responsible for running the country.
Ahmadinejad noted that the executive body is the most important branch of government.
Larijani said the three branches of government have been designed in a way to act independently in order to administer justice and prevent “regression”.
He also called on the country’s officials to pay attention to main issues rather than focusing on marginal ones.
Elsewhere in his talks, Larijani criticized presidential chief of staff Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei’s remarks on propagation of ‘Iranian school of thought rather than the Islamic school of thought’.
Such statements deflect people’s attention from major issues, he opined.
During Larijani’s speech, Alireza Zaker Isfahani, the governor of Isfahan province, and a number of other provincial officials walked out the gathering in protest, IRNA reported.
Mohammad Mehdi Esmaeli, deputy governor of Isfahan province, has said Larijani’s remarks about the president and Mashaei hurt the feelings of “the lovers of the system”.
MP Hossein Sobhani-Nia told the Mehr News Agency on Monday that the president’s statements about the role of Majlis would be studied by a joint committee consisting of officials from Majlis, administration and judiciary.
