Personal motives behind diplomats’ defection: Mehmanparast
TEHRAN, Sept. 22 (MNA) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry has said personal rather than political motives are behind the defection of two of its diplomats in Europe.
“No one believes in their political intentions,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said during his weekly press briefing on Tuesday.
Two low-ranking diplomats in Finland and Belgium have claimed they quit their job in protest to the 2009 presidential election.
However, Mehmanparast said if someone had a political incentive he would not do so 15 months after the election.
Mehmanparast added the mission of these two diplomats was already over so the claim that they have resigned before the end of their mission is not true.
“We consider it (their defections) as an administrative violation,” he opined.
Iran dismisses downgrading ties with UK
Mehmanparast also dismissed a claim by the British diplomatic sources that Iran is downgrading its relations with Britain as Tehran is not trying to name a diplomat to replace its outgoing ambassador to London.
Replacement of ambassadors should go through a formal process which may take time, but no decision has been made in this regard yet, Mehmanparast noted.
