Iranian sculptors among Skywards finalists
TEHRAN, Sept. 22 (MNA) -- Artworks by three Iranian sculptors are among the shortlist of the United Arab Emirates contest for redesigning membership cards of its frequent flyer program, Skywards.
Sculptures by Kambiz Sabri, Sahand Hesamian, and Amir Vafaii are among the twelve finalists in the competition which have been selected from about 2500 works submitted.
Four art items are selected in each color-coded brief of the contest namely Blue, Silver, and Gold “to reflect the membership tier and mood of the theme to be interpreted” as the contest’s website reported.
Three winners in each of the different briefs will be announced on September 25.
In the first phase, the jury selected 50 artworks from those submitted and at final phase, four works will be chosen in each section. The winner will be selected by 100,000 members of Emirates, Sabri told the Persian service of MNA.
Sabri’s work which features enlarged rain drops in the space surrounded by a cube has been selected in the Blue brief section.
“Waves” by Amir Vafaii which is inspired by Turkmen carpet motifs and Hesamian’s “Eastern Sun”, an inspiration by a shape of Islamic tile work called “Shamseh” have been chosen in the Silver brief of the contest.
The winning artwork will replace the designs of renowned contemporary artists like Damien Hirst on membership cards. The artist’s name will be displayed alongside their work on the card and will be seen by Skywards’ members in over 236 countries.
The creator of the winning artwork in each brief will receive a commission fee of US$5,000 and have their name and artwork showcased to a global audience. Each winner will also be invited to Dubai to display their winning entry along with selected art work they have created at Art Dubai 2011.
