Iran’s defense is not dependent on S-300 missiles: minister
TEHRAN, Sept. 25 (MNA) – The defense minister has said Iran has never been relying on the Russian S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems for its defense programs as Moscow announced on Wednesday that it had scrapped plan to deliver the S-300 air defense missile system to Iran.
"Our defense has not and will not be dependent on S-300 missiles," Ahmad Vahidi told the website of the national TV
Vahidi called the decision "irrational" and said Russia has banned the delivery of the missiles under a pressure by the United States and Israel.
The United States has welcomed the decision by Russia.
Russia claimed the missile delivery falls under the UN sanctions.
Iran’s defense chief said the resolution against Tehran "is not clear about air defense missiles.”
"We are not happy to see Russians humiliated by America and the Zionist regime (in a way) that it could be said they write what is dictated to them," Vahidi noted.
Vahidi said on Thursday that Iran will produce an advanced anti-aircraft missile system similar to S-300 in the near future.
“We have planned to build a long-range air defense missile system similar to S-300. By God’s grace and by the Iranian engineers’ efforts, we will reach self-sufficiency in this regard.”
