Downplay of Imam Khomeini’s statement on Majlis intolerable: MP

TEHRAN, Sept. 26 (MNA) – Top lawmaker Shahabeddin Sadr has joined other lawmakers in defending the superior role of Majlis as insisted by Imam Khomeini, saying the Majlis will not remain silent toward any move in downplaying statement by Imam Khomeini that “Majlis is above all affairs”.

In an interview with the Iran newspaper President Ahmadinejad said certain people cite Imam Khomeini’s statement on the importance of the Majlis, but at that time the president was not entirely in charge of the country and the prime minister, who had to be approved by the Majlis, was mostly responsible for running the country.

Ahmadinejad also noted that the executive power is the most important branch of government.

“I do not agree with what President Ahmadinejad said on the role of the Majlis and the administration,” said Sadr, the Majlis deputy speaker.

However, it is not a proper time to discuss the issue due to the president’s visit to New York and the Supreme Leader’s renewed emphasis on maintaining national unity, the MP added.

The authority of Majlis has been enshrined the Constitution, Sadr noted, adding the president’s remarks would be studied in due time.
