Japan tells Ghana of possibility of resuming yen-loan projects+
TOKYO, Sept. 29 Kyodo -
Japan and Ghana agreed Wednesday to forge stronger economic relations, with
Prime Minister Naoto Kan saying he will consider resuming yen-loan-financed
projects in the country that is playing a leading role in democracy in western
Africa.
Kan told Ghanaian President John Evans Atta Mills during talks at his office in
Tokyo that Japan is ready to enhance its development assistance for the
country, according to the Foreign Ministry.
Kan said Japan will consider whether it can provide yen loans again to Ghana,
the ministry said, adding that he promised to accept over 100 additional people
from the African country for training programs over the next three years.
New yen-loan-financed projects have not taken place in Ghana since 2000,
according to the ministry.
''We hope and expect to take advantage of your visit to further advance
economic cooperation and deepen relations on trade and investment,'' Kan told
the president at the outset of the meeting. ''We also hope to get your
cooperation on various international issues including U.N. Security Council
reforms.''
Mills thanked the Japanese government and people for the help they have given
to Ghana and welcomed the ''willingness of the Japanese people to go the extra
mile to help brothers and sisters in Africa.''
