TOKYO, Oct. 3 Kyodo -
An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.7 rocked central Japan on the
Japan Sea coast on Sunday morning, measuring lower 5 on the Japanese seismic
intensity scale of 7 in the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture, the Japan
Meteorological Agency said.
No tsunami warning was issued, and there were no immediate reports of injuries,
according to local governments.
But the agency said residents should be wary of strong tremors over the next
week or so, as the region has often been jolted by a series of tremors
measuring 3 to 4 on the Japanese scale. It added that in December 1990, the
region was shaken by a series of quakes measuring 4 to 5 on the Japanese scale.
The 9:26 a.m. quake registered lower 5 in the city of Joetsu, 4 in Itoigawa in
the prefecture and 3 in the town of Toyono in Nagano Prefecture. The tremor was
also felt across wide areas of the Kanto region in central and eastern Japan.
The focus of the quake was at a depth of about 20 kilometers, the agency said.
The Joetsu region was struck by a series of tremors measuring from M3.3 to M4.5
earlier Sunday, according to the agency, while on Saturday, a quake measuring 4
on the Japanese scale occurred in the region.
There were no reports of injuries in the quakes that hit at 6:37 a.m., 6:52
a.m. and 6:57 a.m., the local governments said.
The Japanese government announced the same day it has set up an
information-gathering liaison office in the risk-management center at the prime
minister's office.
In the latest quake, a ceiling panel of a gym at a junior high school on Joetsu
came off while a window pane at an elementary school in the city was broken.
According to Tokyo Electric Power Co., there were no quake-induced
abnormalities detected at its Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant in Niigata
Prefecture.
East Japan Railway Co. said operation of the Shinetsu line between Kurohime and
Kashiwazaki stations was temporarily halted, but the shinkansen bullet train
lines it operates, including those connecting Tokyo with Joetsu and Nagano,
were all operating normally.
The transport ministry said incoming and outgoing flights at Niigata airport
are operating normally.
