MPs back down to impeach education minister

TEHRAN, Oct.6 (MNA) -- Deputy Parliament speaker Shahabeddin Sadr announced on Tuesday that a number of lawmakers have given up their bid to impeach Education Minister Hamidreza Hajibabaii.

Mohammad Dehqan of the Majlis presiding board also said some MPs have withdrawn their decision to impeach the minister and now the numbers of lawmakers who are pushing for impeachment are less than 10 and therefore “Hajibabaii’s impeachment is canceled.”

MP Elyas Naderan asked Majlis to declare the names of those lawmakers who have backed down from their decision for impeachment.

On Wednesday, 28 lawmakers signed a letter to impeach the education minister but after a few days they asked the presiding board to stop examining the impeachment plan and offered a three-month deadline for realization of their demands from the ministry.

Based on the law, if the impeachment is endorsed by the presiding board the minister will face impeachment after 10 days.

Hajibabaii had earlier expressed astonishment over the impeachment bid against himself.
