Ahmadinejad to attend Caspian Sea summit in Baku

ISFAHAN, Oct. 9 (MNA) -- President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will travel to Azerbaijan in December to attend a summit on the Caspian Sea, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast has announced.

So far, the Caspian Sea states have reached a consensus on over 70 percent of the sea’s legal regime, Mehmanparast told reporters on the sidelines of the Isfahan press exhibition on Thursday.

Mehmanparast expressed hope that the remaining issues over the sea would be resolved in the next meeting.

He further noted that any agreement on division of the seabed resources should be considered fair by all littoral states.

The presidents of the five Caspian states including Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan will attend the summit.

The framework convention to protect the Caspian Sea environment was signed between the littoral states in Tehran in November 2003.

Tehran Convention aims at protecting the Caspian Sea environment from all sources of pollution and protecting, preserving and restoring the marine environment. The convention includes provisions on sustainable and rational use of the bio diversity of the Caspian Sea, as well as environmental monitoring, research and development.
