Iran, Cyprus willing to strengthen ties: ambassador

TEHRAN, Oct. 9 (MNA) – Efstathios Orphanides, the ambassador South Cyprus to Iran, says Nicosia and Tehran are willing to promote their ties.

“There is a mutual desire and willingness by both countries to enhance and broaden their bilateral relations in fields of common interest such as trade, tourism, education and culture,” Orphanides said in a speech marking the country’s Independence Day on Wednesday which was attended by Iranian officials and foreign diplomats.

“There is a desire by both sides to further encourage and promote the cultural, economic and social ties in all levels for the benefit of the people of Cyprus and Iran,” he added.

The Cypriot and Iranian people share great history, culture and civilization, the ambassador noted.

“The geographical position of both countries has given opportunity to the people of Cyprus and Iran to interact with many other civilizations which have left an important mark on the history and culture of the two countries.”

Iran and Cyprus established diplomatic ties in 1960.

“The long-established bonds of friendship between Cyprus and Iran commenced immediately after the independence of Cyprus,” Orphanides noted, adding the two countries share beliefs in the “principle of peace and cooperation against common problems.”
