Iran's MPs propose postponement of subsidy reform plan
TEHRAN, Oct. 10 (MNA) -- The Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee has written a letter to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, asking him to adequately inform people about the details of the subsidy reform plan in order to encourage people to support the plan.
“In the letter, we have asked the president to properly inform people about the details of the subsidy reform plan,” MP Hossein Ebrahimi, the deputy chairman of the parliamentary committee, said on the sidelines of a Majlis session on Sunday.
“According to the information we have received, foreign enemies and domestic seditionists are planning to try to impede the proper implementation of the subsidy reform plan, so transparency over the subsidy reform plan is necessary,” he added.
The Iranian government plans to eliminate the subsidies on fuel, energy, and certain goods over the course of five years. The administration had previously announced that the implementation of the subsidy reform plan would begin in the second half of the Iranian calendar month of Mehr (September 23 to October 22).
On October 6, Tehran Prosecutor General Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi said the Judiciary would take action against those who seek to create instability in the markets by hoarding goods and staging strikes.
Earlier, National Police Chief Ismail Ahmadi Moqaddam had said that the opposition plans to foment economic unrest after the beginning of the implementation of the subsidy reform plan.
“Following the implementation of the economic reforms, seditionists may seek to close the markets and stage strikes, but the police forces will defend the government and will firmly deal with those who seek to complement the enemies’ economic pressure,” Ahmadi Moqaddam said.
Majlis Energy Committee rapporteur Emad Hosseini said on Sunday that several MPs have called for the postponement of the implementation of the subsidy reform plan until the Improving Consumption Patterns Plan comes into effect.
“The examination of the Improving Consumption Patterns Plan in the Majlis is in process. Of course, this plan is a prerequisite for the subsidy reforms, so we have proposed that the administration implement this plan first,” Hosseini said.
Before eliminating subsidies on energy, fuel, and certain goods, people’s consumption patterns should be corrected, he added.
The Improving Consumption Patterns Plan envisages revising consumers’ consumption patterns in order to prevent the wastage of energy and certain goods in the country.
