Kahrizak should not be compared to Guantanamo: official

TEHRAN, Oct. 16 (MNA) – Iran State Inspectorate Organization Head Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi has commented that Kahrizak detention center should not be compared to Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

Some people compare Karizak with Guantanamo, but this comparison is wrong considering the actions carried out by the Judiciary to deal with those involved in the Kahrizak incident, Pour-Mohammadi said on Thursday.

Police and Judiciary officials who were behind the Kahrizak incident have been convicted or suspended and the facility was closed on the Supreme Leader’s order, so Kahrizak should not be compared with Guantanamo, Pour-Mohammadi, a former interior minister, emphasized.

Kahrizak detention center came into the spotlight after it was revealed that three inmates detained in connection with the political unrest following the June 2009 presidential election were beaten to death there. The deaths were a result of beatings and neglect of the physical condition of the injured by the detention center’s officials.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Pour-Mohammadi said law-breaking in the country is on the rise.

In the current situation, the country’s most important need is the observance of law and order, he added.
