Heads of ECO national libraries meet in Ankara
TEHRAN, Oct. 17 (MNA) -- Heads of National Libraries and Archives of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) gathered in Ankara for their third conference.
The 3-day conference held in the National Library of Turkey began with a message from Turkish Prime Minister Rajab Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday where directors from countries of Turkey, Pakistan, Iran, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan were taking part.
Secretary of the event and director of Iran’s National Library and Archives (INLA) Ali-Akbar Ash’ari regarded the event as a big step to help develop cooperation among ECO member states.
“During the two previous conferences held in Tehran and Baku, the national libraries began their cooperation in exchanging knowledge and experience,” Ash’ari said.
“We need to expand this collaboration. As the secretary of the conference, I am determined to ask the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) to ratify the conference for increased international cooperation",he added.
He also announced that Iran’s National Library has launched a joint website of ECO states and asked the libraries to help enrich the site.
Director of National Library of Turkey Tuncel Acar also stressed on developing cultural relations and said that the close association of national libraries would help boost cultural relations.
The national libraries need to investigate development of other international libraries and improve their abilities in order to reach a world standard, he remarked.
Ismet Yilmaz, undersecretary of Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry also presented at the conference regarded the ECO region as the cradle of world civilizations and said, “We possess a common historical background that leads us to possess a shared consciousness and this conference is a major step toward future collaborations.”
