Tehran, Baghdad agree to resolve Iranian pilgrims’ problems

TEHRAN, Oct. 18 (MNA) – Iran and Iraq will increase cooperation to facilitate the travel of Iranian pilgrims visiting holy sites in Iraq and resolve their problems, Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar said on Saturday.
Najjar made the remarks during a joint press conference with visiting Iraqi Interior Minister Jawad al-Bulani following their meeting in Tehran on Saturday.

Najjar said in his meeting with al-Bulani, they discussed ways to expand ties in all areas, agreed to facilitate pilgrims’ travels to Iraq, to resolve security problems along the joint borders, and to take serious measures to fight drug smuggling.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he said Iran has always sought a secure and stable Iraq and supported the institutionalization of democracy in the country.

“Stability, security and independence are highly important in Iraq,” he said, adding foreign forces should be persuaded to leave the country and hand over affairs to the country’s officials.

For his part, Al-Bulan said Iran and Iraq play important roles in the region and two countries share common interests.

Pointing to his talks with Najjar, he said they promised the joint committees on border issues start work.

He also said they discussed issues of drugs and terrorism.

Iran and Iraq have taken important steps to promote relations, he said, adding Baghdad is interested to develop relations with neighboring nations and those which somewhat help Iraq move forward.

On Iranian pilgrims’ issues, he said Iraq attaches great importance to pilgrims’ welfare and their security concerns and that the two countries have reached some agreements in this regard.

Al-Bulan said he had ordered the relevant Iraqi officials to resolve any problems facing Iranian pilgrims.

Al-Bulan also held a meeting with Saeed Jalili, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council on Saturday, briefing him on the security situation in Iraq.

He also thanked Iran for helping Iraqi people both during the Saddam dictatorship and afterwards.

He also called for the expansion of ties between the two countries particularly in security issues.

Jalili also insisted that it is important that Iraq take some measures to help resolve the current problems facing Iranian pilgrims.
