Everyone should actively promote national unity: Leader
QOM, Oct. 19 (MNA) – Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has said political figures and the general public should seriously promote national unity not just with words but also with action.
Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks during an address to a large crowd of people in Qom on Tuesday.
Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani, grand ayatollahs, and members of the Assembly of Experts and the Society of Qom Seminary Teachers also attended the gathering.
The Leader said the hegemonistic powers are making serious efforts to undermine “religion and the people’s loyalty” in Iran.
The enemy is aware that the Islamic Revolution could not have resisted their plots if it had not been based on religion, he observed.
Thus, a system that is based on religion will not succumb to the pressure of enemies and hegemonistic powers, he stated.
The Leader also said the people’s support provides pillars of strength to the Islamic system.
The seditionist leaders are using a number of methods to undermine the people’s loyalty to and trust in the Islamic system, such as spreading rumors to disappoint people, attempting to make people pessimistic about officials, in particular the heads of the three branches of government, and magnifying the weaknesses of the country, he stated.
However, the enemy has never been able to create a rift between the Iranian people and the country’s officials, he added.
The enemy is also attempting to separate Islam from clergymen and politics because they know that clerics play an effective role in the lives of the people, he said.
But the people’s response to the seditionist acts on Ashura day in 2009 was a clear sign of the plotters’ defeat, he noted.
Protesters took to the streets in central Tehran on December 27, 2009, which was the day of Ashura, and chanted slogans against top government officials.
Mourning ceremonies are held across Iran on Ashura day to mark the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his 72 companions.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Ayatollah Khamenei said the sanctions imposed on Iran over its nuclear program will have no effect and they were imposed to mount pressure on the country in order to distance people from the Islamic system.
“Today, Iranians are moving toward a bright future with more progress and will foil the enemy’s plots,” the Leader stated.
